Why in news?
A recent study pointed out that Songbird in Europe and Asia is being hunted to near extinction.

Why are their numbers plunging?
Because of Chinese eating habits - They call it the 'Rice Bird'. 
Also, consumption of these birds has increased as a result of economic growth and prosperity in East Asia.

Features of the Song bird:


  • Also called yellow-breasted bunting 
  • Vocal organ typically is highly developed in such a way as to produce a diverse and elaborate bird song.
Conservation status
Endangered as per IUCN Red List
