Leptospirosis

Why in news?
With twelve deaths from Leptospirosis in Mumbai in the first week of July and 21 cases in the last seven days, many are getting affected from the disease despite the scarcity of rains. 

About Leptospirosis:

-Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that spreads from rat urine contaminated water
-A bacteria called Spirochete causes leptospirosis.
-Leptospirosis affects both animals and humans. Humans can get infected through direct contact with urine of infected animals or with a urine contaminated environment. 
-The bacteria enters through cuts, scraped, worn area or through mucous membrane from the eyes, nose, sinuses, mouth.
-People suffering from the illness have at least two of the following symptoms
Pain in the muscles
Calf tenderness
Conjuctival suffusion
Chills
Abdominal pain
• Headache
• Jaundice
• Oliguria, should be considered a suspected leptospirosis case
-The key is early diagnosis and treatment – within 3-5 days after the onset of symptoms. 
A simple blood test and medication can cure lepto, provided it is diagnosed early.
