Why important?
- Astra is highly sophisticated air-to-air missile. - BVRAAM
- It can be fired from beyond visual range.
- Supersonic. Very high speed.. up to Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound).
- lock-on-target so has high kill probability even if target changes its course.
- "lock-on-target" can be done before launch or updated in mid-course.
- In both: head-on as well as tail-chase mode
Details:
- Indigenously develeped. By DRDO.
- The 3.8 metre tall Astra can carry a warhead weighing 15 kg
- After a few more pre-induction trials, the supersonic missile is
expected to be inducted by the end of 2016.
